hey all, So, i guess that Warp US tour that was just announced isn't going to a whole bunch of places, for sure, but it's no wonder, if the replies on the list are anything to go by. There's been, like, eight people loudly proclaiming 'i hate you why aren't you coming here by the way you were crap last time you came anyhow why do you bother?' How about 'thanks for bothering to put together a tour at all, Warp. we don't get many good European artist concerts in the States.'? And no, I'm not in one of the cities it's going to. On a slightly different note, here's a paste of Mike Paradinas (Planet Mu label-boss)'s planet-mu.com messageboard post about how well Planet Mu CDs sell. -- It's up to the artists, I don't want to publish exact sales figures if they'd rather keep it secret. But on average this year (last 12 months) cd albums have sold 800 copies. Our best seller in last 12 months was The Cosmic Forces Of Mu which sold 2217 copies worldwide. just over 12 months ago the Slag Boom remixes cd did very well at almost 3000 copies. The average earnings of a Planet Mu artist (from sales royalties, not their real jobs obviously) is ?800 per album ($1190) which is the royalties on 1000 sales. But I usually give them an advance of more than that. -- [end of paste] Quite honestly, since I'd consider Mu to be in the top three most well-known 'idm'-ish labels in the world right now, it's pretty tragic. Internet piracy to blame? Well, there was an interesting article by Moby (of all people!) on his personal site which talked about his views on that type of thing (not Planet Mu specifically - just piracy!.) It basically went - even if there _are_ a lot of people who don't pirate music, sales will be depressed in any genre which has a lot of tech-savvy listeners, simply because a certain percentage of people who understand how to pirate will pirate. I know the idm-scene right now is thriving on the Net and collaboration - just seems a shame that the best artists on Planet Mu like Venetian Snares sell about a fifth as many as some below-average skanky SoCal punk band, or what have you (pick another example if you're offended by that one!) ohwell, there's a solutionless rant if ever i saw one :) regards, h0l! Maybe some piracy, but I think bad distribution also plays a significant part. Here in Belfast it's a pain to get anything decent by any other means except mail order. And I've had bad experiences in that field (Sister Ray / Rough Trade) - so if people can't get the product they'll turn to downloading it. I prefer an original copy but a lot of material is too tricky to find. Also, some labels don't seem to press enough copies - Skam being a good example of this IMO. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I don't think that's the real problem, as I can't see any more people in Belfast buying Venetian Snares just becasue it's in HMV (although they do have the v/vm aphex twin remixes in there, weird.........) Try some different mail order companies, Rough Trade always seems to be over priced and slow, for me anyway. All the below are have been good to me in the past, plus are usually very quick at delivering to belfast: http://www.boomkat.com/ http://www.normanrecords.com/ http://www.warprecords.com/mart (warpmart now sells sells 50+ labels) http://www.juno.co.uk glenn Roy Martin wrote:
